“The Garden” is a project was commissioned for us from Diesel via curator Kimiko Mitani Woo of MW company. Stemming from a series of nudes we had been working on previously, I developed a loose narrative based on texts I was studying on the concept of the Garden of Eden. Being my first solo gallery show I wanted to explore some of my personal esoteric [and somewhat self indulgent] interests.

Still from "The Garden" film - 2010.

The project became a collaboration between myself, my recent partners on the Flying Lotus “Los Angeles” art, Commonwealth, who created the masks and art director Caroline Celis, who came to Tokyo to install her sculptures for the show.

Prints were created by Roland, the drum machine makers, and where quite stunning.

We shot to a loose script on a off for a few months before designing an install in the Diesel gallery in Tokyo. Kimiko brought in a fantastic crew to make it all happen. The group effort was amazing, even having the BUILD design team creating the posters and books for the show.

Post-show the Masks were used for our project with Blonde Redhead, the video and print for “Not Getting there”, as well as used live by Kazu for the subsequent tour. The film portions were repurposed for the Flying Lotus tour visuals in 2010-2011. It was fascinating to see the original project morph into these various new, unplanned outlets in an organic fashion.
